‘Shielded’ by Jane Bannister
40x30 cm, oil on linen, unframed
This portrait is a response to my friend’s isolation from Covid-19. Three months on and still isolated, her only escape from home is through carefully managed visits to hospital for life-saving treatment. Throughout this period of shielding, although she is not free, her thoughts
are free; thoughts of visits to her mother’s home, to the countryside or seashore.
Many of us with less to endure and a more certain future have the beginnings of a new freedom while others do not. She is an inspiration in her fortitude and positive outlook with never an expression of complaint but always one of optimism.
