‘Covid Canal 2’ by Sheila MacNeill
40 x 60cms, mixed media on paper
I am Scottish artist and educator based in Glasgow. After studying early studies at the Fine Arts College, London, I moved into academic life and worked as a researcher and lecturer in the UK higher education sector for over 20 years. I am still active as a consultant in digital learning and teaching, but now spend more time on developing my artistic practice.
I work in a range of mediums and materials to create landscapes based on the colours, shapes and atmosphere of the environments I experience. Over lockdown I have spent many hours walking along the Forth and Clyde Canal near my home in Glasgow, thinking of images of the COVID virus. At the same time I have watched the water lilies grow. I began to see parallels between the images of the virus and the patterns and colours of the lilies. These have inspired a series of landscapes.
