The word Naboland I found in a Turkish newspaper when I worked as a draughtsman for the German Archaeological Institute in the ancient site of Pergamon on the West Coast of Turkey. Naboland was the name of a Swedish cargoship that had a collision with a Turkish submarine.
This naval accident reminded me of the toy submarine I had found the previous year. Suffering from a mild sunstroke I had a feverish vision that my submarine could explore the unknown continent of Naboland in years to come.
I had my artistic training at Hamburg College of Art but it needed my move to Scotland in 1979 to let my vision blossom. Here I found the majestic and awe inspiring mountains and the sense of humour that allowed my whimsical idea to flourish.
I did a post-graduate year at Edinburgh College of Art, followed by teaching jobs at all Scottish Art colleges, my last being the longest at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, from 1995 to 2020. Over the years I have worked in many media from drawing and painting to printmaking and installation and even ventured into the fascinating world of animation.
