We are pleased to announce the first exhibition to be held at the RGI Kelly Gallery since lockdown will be Sean Ellcombe.
Sean Ellcombe is a Glasgow born and based artist, who graduated painting from the Glasgow School of Art in 2019. Since graduating, Ellcombe has been actively nurturing a painting practice, one which investigates the physiologies of the painting in tandem with how a viewer physically engages with the surface. This is an active and playful invitation to engage the viewer with painting as an accepted material. It is Ellcombe’s belief to challenge traditional expectations of both the artwork and the viewer – with painting being archaically a known pathfinder to working idea of art.
Regarding the practice of submerging the painting into the gallery walls Ellcombe states:
“I want to do the walls to focus on the faces of the works…the surfaces, I don’t want these paintings to be looked at as objects really, like the last show… I mean, I just want to see them as I wanted to see them. They were made to be subdued, that is how I want to see them.’
Ellcombe has explored this through canvas, installation and sculptural objects. He uses spaces to evaluate his thoughts on painting which was exemplified in his prior solo show Paintings on Legs at Salt Space Gallery in 2019. The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Arts invited Sean to produce a new solo show at the Kelly Gallery in October 2020. Window Works is a series of new, large scale painting works by Ellcombe submerged into the gallery walls.
